We are hearing more questions and concerns from the family of a West Boca High School student who died after undergoing corrective breast surgery.  Stephanie Kuleba died over the weekend and Tuesday evening, family and friends gathered to mourn at the Babione Funeral Home in suburban Boca Raton.

One friend Tuesday described Stephanie as "the sunshine of our lives".  What has frightened so many younger and older adults is that this was a sudden death as a result of a surgery South Florida knows all too well.

With flowers in hand, friends poured in to the Babione Funeral Home.  "Because I loved her, I have to be here for her," says friend Colleen Kirkwood.  Pictures probably meant for graduation mementos are now pasted on poster board.  Photos and stories are what they can share with Stephanie Kuleba’s family.

The family's attorney, Roberto Stanziale, says doctors reported that Stephanie died from a rare genetic disorder called malignant hyperthermia, which was triggered by certain anesthetics.  Stanziale says Stephanie went in for the breast surgery Friday primarily to correct a birth defect and breast augmentation was in the plan as well.
"Whether this was a vanity issue or whether this was not a vanity issue doesn't matter. She should not have died during this procedure," says Stanziale.  Stanziale says there are so many questions that need to be answered.
"What was the anesthetic she was given and what could have been done to prevent it? When was it diagnosed if at all while in the surgical suite and did they have the medication needed to treat her?" says Stanziale.

Friends say it's the questions and the emotions that make this day so difficult.  "Just all of a sudden, no one expected anything," says Kirkwood.  At West Boca High School, the makeshift memorial remains and it continues to grow. Flowers, candles, spirit beads, pom poms were all resting on the fence for their friend Stephanie.

"It's really hard at school because everyone really loved Steph. We would sometimes walk to third hour together, so I had third hour today and she wasn't there," says Brooke Golob.  At school, at work... everyone seemed to love Steph.  For the past three years, she's worked at Rotelli's Pizza & Pasta.  "A real team player... a real pleasure to have her on board with us," says Rotelli owner Cathy Bilotti.   "I feel really bad for what happened.  It's tragic," says Dylan Lindsey.   Lindsey worked with Stephanie at Rotelli's and attended the viewing Tuesday.

Autopsy results are pending.

The family expressed thanks to the community for the support and hopes they can soon learn exactly why their daughter died so that something like this doesn't happen to any one else.

in Boca Raton where Stephanie Kuleba had her surgery.

The surgery was being performed not in a hospital but in a medical office as many many surgeries are.  The plastic surgeon was Dr. Steven Howard Schuster, according to our partners at the Sun-Sentinel.  He is board certified and has been in practice for 24 years and has no disciplinary action against him.

A touching memorial grows for Stephanie Kuleba. Captain of the varsity cheerleaders. bright and pretty...  Dayna Mercer/Fellow Cheerleader: "She was just the kind of girl everyone loved; there was nothing bad about her."

Friends say she was undergoing breast augmentation surgery here when an hour and a half into surgery she had a fatal allergic reaction.  "It was just sad to see her go, she was like a wonderful person, smart, talented."

"I would like to know my loved one had a board certified anathesiolost taking care of their case.  Well known West Palm Dermatologist Dr. Kenneth Beer shows us the quickly accessible kit used to treat patients with allergic reactions.  Beer used to do full sedation in his office. but no more.  "I stopped doing it because I felt it was safer for my patients.."

For two days friends have been gathering holding vigils exchanging emotional e mails.  How did this happen. How did an athletic kid suddenly go code red and die 24 hours later at Delray Medical Center. It’s too big a question in this time of mourning.

Victoria Briggs: "Her heart was too big for her body her attitude, a die hard, she was a die hard."

The family which is withholding comment on the tragedy has hired Roberto Stanziale a personal injury attorney out of Ft Lauderdale...    A funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Jude Catholic Church.

A West Boca Raton High School Senior died from complications after undergoing corrective breast surgery at a doctor's office.  18 year-old Stephanie Kuleba underwent a corrective procedure Friday with board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stephen Shuster along with an anesthesiologist.

During surgery, family attorney Roberto Stanziale says, Stephanie had a reaction to the anesthesia medication due to a pre-existing genetic disorder.  That disorder was suspected to be malignant hyperthermia, which is triggered by certain anesthetics, and is a preventable injury when a common drug called dantrolene is administered properly.  According to Stanziale, medics were not called for at least an hour and forty minutes.

It is unclear if a dantrolene was inside of the doctor's office at the time of the procedure and administered to Stephanie, and if it was administered, it is unknown if it worked.  When medics did arrive, they rushed her to Delray Medical Center, and doctors began to work on her in the emergency room.  She was then put on life support, but it was too late.  Stephanie Kuleba died Saturday morning at Delray Medical Center.

Friends and family held a candlelight vigil for the West Boca Raton High senior Sunday night.  Memorial pages have been set up on Facebook.  She was captain of the varsity cheerleading squad.  She was recently accepted to the University of Florida and had dreams of studying to be a doctor.

The anesthesiologist’s name is not available.
